Over 300,000 Russian-speaking teens and young adults live in Israel today. More than 25% of them drop out of high school, while among minors with criminal records, their representation exceeds 75%. Furthermore, Russian-speaking youth constitute approximately 50% of teens charged with drug-related offences.
1+1 Association of Immigrant Youth (a non-profit Israeli organization) was founded in 1998 by Russian-speaking young adults who understood that these troubled young men and women were disengaged from Israeli society, and developing antagonism to the Jewish experience in the Jewish state.
To address this escalating problem, 1+1 is using social involvement to empower Russian-speaking teens and young adults. This it is doing in a three-pronged approach that, together, creates a full program of activities:
• Development and implementation of projects nationwide
1+1 operates 4 projects: "Route to Success", "Immigrants On-line", “Back from the Edge", and Lema'an (for the benefit of), the first three designed for teens (ages 13-17), the fourth aimed at young adults (ages 20-30). • Advocacy and lobbying 1+1 is actively changing the legislation in Israel by teaming up with the Coalition for At-Risk Immigrant Youth and endorsing numerous legislative proposals concerning budget allocation and structural changes within the government. These bills are vital to securing a more efficient, professional, and culture-sensitive treatment of Russian-speaking youth and young adults. • Joint project development with other NGOs
1+1 strongly believes that only team work can maximize the impact of everybody’s efforts. We therefore use our knowledge and experience in the field of informal education for Russian-speaking teens and young adults to assist other NGOs in developing frameworks for Russian-speaking young people.
